Session: CyberTech Girls & GenCyber Girls – Digital Forensics for Kids
October 1 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT
Presented By: Tobi West, CISSP, GCFE
Coastline College in Orange County, CA hosts beginner cybersecurity events and summer camps for 7th to 12th grade female students to help reduce the gender gap. Coastline’s one-week GenCyber camp in July 2019 included hands-on keyboard activities, hands-on hardware activities, and a career panel to help campers further develop their interest in cybersecurity concepts and professions.
Hands-on workshops focus on cybersecurity concepts with age-appropriate activities such as mock crime scene with simulated digital forensics case, binary bracelets, crystal ball career goal, secure password development, Arduino do-it-yourself kit, computer assembly, and wireless network workshops. FBI, NSA, and local industry professionals provided insight to cybersecurity and technology careers.
Coastline hosts CyberTech Girls events annually to help girls develop an interest in digital forensics careers. With an emphasis on the mock crime scene activities, the workshop demonstrates chain of custody and showcases careers in digital forensics. You can help provide insight into how these workshops can be made more exciting to help reduce the gender gap and bring more skilled professionals to the field of digital forensics.
